ATLANTIC 252 RIP

Former Atlantic 252 Presenter Dave James took a visit over to Mornington House on Tuesday 29th October 2002.  An emotional set of photos for anyone who once graced the home of the Long Wave Giant.

Dave writes:

"Welcome to Atlantic 252, or what's left of it. As I understand it, all of the office furniture is to be auctioned, and the broadcast equipment is in storage at the tx site in Summerhill.  Mornington House itself is now on the property market, I believe the asking price is half a million."

"These are probably the last pictures taken inside the building. It was quite eery and weird, being back. The building was freezing cold, with no signs of life at all! The first thing to strike, is that the brass plates are gone from the front door. On entering, you notice that all of the signed pictures and gold discs are gone from the staircase wall and the boardroom. The offices are empty, and the Programme Controllers office is empty... only the desks remain, where we were airchecked and hauled over the hot coals more than once!"

"The transmitters are powered down, most of the time. When Tom gets bored, he'll fire them up and broadcast some tone... it seems to entertain the anoraks!"

The racks room at the top of the building was still laregly intact, one presumes that this too will be ripped out before the place is sold? The record library and accounts are empty now, though the jocks lockers (still had my stickers on nearly 2 years after I left!!!) are still there!

Reception was also derelict... just the chairs where we were told off for "loose talk" (!) and our pigeon holes.

Production has lost its huge mixer, now stored at the TX site. The ProTools machines and cd/md machines are also removed. All that remained in studio 2 was the mixer and some 252 branding on the walls.

On Air was almost usable... the desk and RCS machines were still in place, they were to be removed later that day. No sign of the microphone, TV, md / cd players though!!! The white boards are still there, with the 252 branding still splashed accross the walls. The wooden brackets which housed the cd/md players lies on the floor against the walls.

Dave James.

Simon Hardwick adds:

"Much of the equipment used for broadcasting Atlantic in Morntington House went on to be sold to Splash FM Ltd who refurbished it and put it on air when they launched in 2003. I'm not sure what happened to the London studio though."
